Promoting health and wellbeing through massage
Massage therapy is an age-old healing art which effectively alleviates physical, mental and emotional ailments. Massage therapy does this by relieving stress and pain, and by improving breathing, muscle tone, and circulation of the blood flow and lymph. For older adults, all these benefits add up to a better sense of health and wellbeing.
Physiotherapy:
A key component in staying active and independent
Based on a thorough understanding of the body’s mechanics in health and disease, physiotherapy helps relieve pain and improve movement and function in older adults suffering from various disorders. If you or your loved one is having back and neck pains, arthritis or difficulties with walking and balance, you should consider physiotherapy as one of the key treatment components in staying active and independent.
Drawing on their extensive experience treating seniors, the Health in Motion physiotherapists at the Terraces of Baycrest specialize in three areas of rehabilitation:
- Orthopedic physiotherapy, a field of rehabilitation that focuses on bone, muscle and related soft tissue. Our orthopedic physiotherapists at the Terraces of Baycrest treat seniors suffering from back and neck pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, fractures, strains and sprains, and whiplash injury resulting from a motor vehicle accident. Orthopedic physiotherapy, which lasts about 30 minutes, is also suitable for patients recovering from a hip or knee replacement, or back surgery.
- Neurological physiotherapy is used to treat people with neurological disorders such as stroke, Alzheimer, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. It is also used to treat balance and gait disorders. The Health In Motion physiotherapists at the Terraces of Baycrest focus on function and teach patients to be independent in their daily routines. To achieve this we guide and educate family members and caregivers on how to approach and guide their loved one in performing daily tasks independently. Neurological physiotherapy sessions involve one-on-one interaction between the therapist and patient and takes between 45 minutes to one hour.
- Post-surgical rehabilitation, which involves a broad spectrum of treatments aimed at restoring patients to their normal level of movements and function. At Health In Motion our therapists have extensive experience in this area of rehabilitation. Depending on the type of surgery, this course of treatment may involve learning how to breathe and move without pain or discomfort, or how to avoid complications after the operation.
