Getting started as a Health in Motion client

Are you new to Health in Motion? On this page, you’ll find information that will help you understand our approach, prepare for treatment, and ensure the best results for you or your loved one.

Our philosophy and approach

Whether they’re suffering from a minor injury or a serious and debilitating condition, our goal for all our patients is to help them become self-sufficient in their daily lives. But to do this, we must first break well-established patterns of dependency on the people around them. We instil in our patients the mindset of doing things for themselves while at the same time building their physical ability to perform everyday functions. And instead of focusing on their disability, we focus on what our patients are able to do and then develop these abilities through therapy.

The role of family and caregivers

Immediate family members and caregivers play a critical role in our patients’ progress. We ask that you be present at therapy sessions and during family meetings so we can show you how you can guide your loved one through the tasks they must perform daily to regain and build function. Remember that we spend only a few hours a week with each of our patients, but you are with your loved one every day. Please help us ensure the rehabilitation program is continued at home as an integral part of your loved one’s daily routine.

As an important partner in your loved one’s treatment, you need to be strong and steady  -- even when it hurts you to watch your loved one struggle. You may also need to change the way you interact with your loved one, such as moving away from doing everything and focusing more on helping your loved one learn to do things independently. It may be difficult at first, but we promise you that the results will be worth the sacrifice.

Preparing for treatment

To get the best treatment results, please follow these instructions when coming to our clinic for functional rehabilitation, massage and osteopathy:

  • Wear clothes, such as sportswear or lounge wear, that allow you to work and move comfortably.
  • We work in bare feet, so please take your shoes off before entering the treatment area. Turn off your cell phone or any other electronic devices as these can distract patients from their treatment.
  • Patients should eat at least one hour prior to their therapy session. We kindly ask you not to bring any food to the clinic.

What to expect on your first appointment

Depending on the type of therapy, your first appointment can last 45 minutes to two hours. During this initial appointment your therapist will gather information to help build a comprehensive clinical history, perform different tests to gain a better understanding of  the condition, and explain the appropriate treatment.

It is important that you understand the nature and goals of your treatment program, and your own role in recovery and rehabilitation. We encourage you to ask questions or express any concerns you may have during your first appointment or at any point in your treatment program. Our therapists will always take the time to adress your questions or concerns.
