Katerina's Story
Watch Katerina’s TherapyKaterina’s mother wrote the following story about her daughter. Her mother has given us permission to post the story at this website. Her daughter’s name has been changed to protect her privacy.
Early childhood difficulties.
Katerina began walking somewhat later than most children—at 16 months. My husband and I noticed that she walked funny—one sided almost, dragging the left side of her body. She also tucked her left arm under and “toe-walked” on her left foot. After complaining to our pediatrician that there was something wrong with her, and receiving a “There’s nothing to worry about” response, we pushed to see an orthopedic surgeon who stipulated that her condition was more serious than we had originally assumed.
Diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy.
After visiting several neurologists, Katerina was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy on February 13, 2006 at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. At the time of the diagnosis, my husband and I were told that she would have a permanent limp and possibly require occupational and speech therapy. We were devastated and spent the better part of the next few months in a depressive daze, trying to understand why this had happened to our beautiful baby girl. Katerina’s pediatrician at the time referred us to another physiotherapy clinic where the major part of the treatment was passive, encompassing mostly massage.
Learning to walk again at Health In Motion.
In the meantime, my mother had heard of Natan’s work at Health in Motion Rehabilitation in Toronto. In April 2006, Katerina came to Health in Motion for a consultation. Although I had hope that the effects of Katerina’s “permanent brain injury” could be reversed and that she could eventually walk, run and jump like most children, I was skeptical. That immediately changed when I saw what Natan could do with our daughter. Natan challenged and motivated Katerina to perform exercises herself and “re-taught” our daughter how to walk again.
“Phenomenal progress.”
It has been just over two years since we first brought Katerina to Natan for treatment. Katerina still regularly comes to Natan for bi-weekly visits, but the results of the therapy are astounding. She is able to walk with virtually no discernable limp, and can run and jump. She attends daycare and is an active, playful and perfectly normal 4 year old. She has also been discharged from Bloorview Kids Rehab because of her phenomenal progress.
“The best that she can be!”
This year, we switched pediatricians, and upon our first visit, the pediatrician did not notice that there was anything wrong with Katerina’s gait, balance or coordination. He was surprised to hear that she had been born with CP! We would like to thank Natan for providing Katerina with the opportunity to be the best that she can be!
